Challenge

The project objective was to develop a mechanism enabling fast, controlled folding and unfolding of multi-segment truss structures. Designed for a three-segment assembly, the central segment serves as a stationary core, while the front and rear segments are deployed and stowed relative to it.

Solution

Proximo Aero engineered a mechanism that couples rotational kinematics with linear travel, providing rapid system reconfiguration into its operational envelope. The unit executes a full 180° rotation of the segments with end-of-travel hard stops to restrict over-rotation in final positions. The entire assembly is integrated onto a dedicated intermediate frame that mounts the stationary central truss while ensuring rigid support and safeguarding the articulating segments against uncontrolled displacement.

Scope of Work

Comprehensive engineering delivery from initial kinematic concept through final manufacturing data packages:

  • Conceptual definition and kinematic modeling combining rotational actuation with guided linear translation
  • Mechanical engineering design of precision positioning and rigid mechanical interlocking systems in working positions
  • Design of a specialized intermediate frame mounting the central truss segment and stabilizing moving assemblies
  • Geometric clearance studies and safety retaining features preventing uncontrolled segment displacement during motion
  • Preparation of complete manufacturing and assembly drawings required for system fabrication

Outcome

The delivered system enables efficient reconfiguration of multi-segment truss assemblies by seamlessly synchronizing rotary motion with guided linear displacement and robust mechanical locking. The mechanism provides dependable repeatability throughout folding cycles and structural rigidity during active field operation.
